THE SHORT STORY
I hung out and talked music with one of the biggest stars in music history, stepped on Carl Perkins’ blue suede shoes, helped launch a cable news experiment called CNN, played keyboards with Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, became friends with James Brown starting with his stay in prison, and deconstructed 12 women in 70 hours of plastic surgery for one of the wildest reality shows ever made.
These days, I work where storytelling, technology and “what if we tried this?” collide.
THE LONGER STORY
I’ve spent much of my career making television, marketing, and occasionally weird things happen for CNN, VH1, ABC, NBC, Fox, The Weather Channel, and CBS.
At CNN, I was Executive Producer of Entertainment News during an era when pop culture became serious news business. Later, I moved deeper into branding and marketing, picking up 6 Emmy statues along the way for work that ranged from big image campaigns to those wonderfully terrifying local-news promos about what might be living in your bed sheets.
Today, I lead creative and brand work for CBS stations in San Francisco and Sacramento. But increasingly, the interesting stuff lives outside the traditional lines: AI, virtual production, Unreal Engine, AR/VR, interactive experiences, apps and new ways of combining code with storytelling.
I’m fascinated by what happens when creative people get access to tools they technically aren’t supposed to know how to use.
That fascination goes back a while.
During the first dot-com boom, I created The Toy Box for CNN, which basically gave me an excuse to play with every new gadget coming onto the market. I also bounced around the world writing travel stories for CNN.com. Not a bad gig.
Later, I created ClubJumpr, an app and website we called the “Nielsens of Nightlife.” Working with engineering teams in Los Angeles, Moscow and—because technology is weird—Minnesota, we developed a system for tracking crowds at bars and restaurants in real time and predicting which places would be busy, with which demographic, before they got busy.
We didn’t close the second round of funding. We did learn a lot.
Long before any of that, I was a club DJ.
That led to several weeks, spread across a couple of years, hanging out with Michael Jackson. My first-ever promo was written on a hotel notepad and voiced by Michael himself
Still probably the best testimonial I’m ever going to get.
Music has never really left the picture. I’m a drummer, aspiring keyboard player, recovering studio-equipment addict, music-software obsessive, dub-edit DJ and photographer.
And lately, I spend an unreasonable amount of time experimenting with AI, building apps, creating virtual worlds, figuring out new creative workflows and seeing how far one person with an idea and the right technology can get.
Turns out: pretty far.
I still paint and draw on an iPad, too.
"Undo" remains one of humanity’s greatest inventions (?)
